Fernando Malave

Fernando was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico but moved with his family to Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts when he was seven. His dad, who was a United Methodist pastor, served a congregation made up of members of the growing Latino community. Fernando lived with his family in Massachusetts for eight years before returning to Puerto Rico. He completed high school and had the blessing of supporting his dad in the ministry. Fernando joined the Coast Guard in 1986 and was stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1988, he returned to the United States and began working on getting certified as a high school science and math teacher. After eight years in the Coast Guard, he joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard and also worked as a Science teacher. He recently began his 27th year teaching.

In 2003, Fernando answered God’s call on his life to the ministry. He began the candidacy process in the United Methodist Church, which he completed in 2006. In 2007, he was appointed Lay Pastor of Genesis, a Hispanic Mission in Casselberry. Then, after becoming a certified Local Pastor, he came to Community of Faith. Fernando is blessed to share his life with his three daughters.

I don’t have a favorite verse or scripture. The word of God is so rich and has spoken to me powerfully in different seasons and struggles of my life.  Psalm 1 was the first psalm my mother encouraged us to memorize and every time I recite it I am reminded of the importance of having God’s word in our minds and hearts.

What was your childhood ambition?
I wanted to be a famous professional baseball player like Roberto Clemente and help others like he did. I also wanted to build my mom a large house with a pool.

What was your first job?
I worked delivering milk at school and making key copies.

What is your favorite food?
White rice, beef stew ( Puerto Rican style), black beans, tossed salad
upside down pineapple cake.

What would a perfect day be for you?
A day where time would stand still.

What are your favorite characteristics of Jesus?
His love and mercy have no boundaries.
