Four Corners Charter School
Personal attention and tutoring goes a long way toward helping children who struggle with reading. There is a need for people willing to tutor elementary school children on their reading skills at Four Corners. Volunteers are invited to come in for 30 minutes to an hour (sometime between 8am-9am, Monday-Thursday). Our contact is the legendary Beth Berner: 407-716-2698.
Lake County Family Literacy Program
There are 200 people on the waiting list to learn English or how to read at the Cagan Crossings Community Library (at Cagan Crossing on Hwy 27, north of the junction with Hwy 192 across from Wal-Mart). The Literacy program provides volunteers with 12 hours of training free of charge to help you become an adult literacy tutor. Our contact: Ericka Greene, 352-241-6183 egreene@alkeline.lib.fl.us
East Coast Migrant Center
Many of us know a little about the migrant center from COF's past 8 years of involvement with them. The center provides a Head Start program for the children (0-5 years old) of migrant farm workers. Without this place of learning and care, most of these young children from migrant families would spend their days idle in the fields while their parents worked. We donate food which they are always in need of. They also invite volunteers coming by to show the children love by playing and stimulating the minds of the older ones and holding the younger ones (children are at the facility between 6am-6pm on weekdays). Our contact: Annette Fields/ 351 Frederick Avenue, Dundee, Florida 33838/ (863) 439-0864.
